Al Sufi’s Book of Fixed Stars
The Book of Fixed Stars is an astronomical text written by Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi (Azophi) around 964. The book was written in Arabic, although the author himself was Persian. It was an attempt to create a synthesis of the comprehensive star catalogue in Ptolemy’s Almagest (books VII and VIII) with the indigenous Arabic astronomical traditions on the constellations.

I cannot get over the hierarchical structure in Persian miniatures where (in the absence of perspective) this effect is achieved solely through visual separators such as boxes and rules; often intricately placed inside each other or in overlapping layers - creating complex but very easy to navigate informational systems. I love the miniatures of Mehmed Siyah Qalem, or Mehmed of the Black Pen. Although Mehmed Siyah Qalem was a Turk from Central Asia his work is very strongly inspired by Chinese art, which was imported into Turkestan by the Mongol invasions at the times, as well as by the strong trade links between Eastern and Western Asia.
